31st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration

Serve & Connect Founder Kassy Alia to be Keynote Speaker

Chief executive officer and founder of Serve & Connect, Kassy Alia, will be the keynote speaker at the City of Columbia’s 31st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Monday, January 21, 2019, the City of Columbia and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Foundation announced.

Kassy Alia founded Serve & Connect — a nonprofit organization focused on promoting community resilience and well-being through transformative police and community partnerships — in memory of her late husband, Officer Gregory Alia who was killed in the line of duty on September 30, 2015.

Under her leadership, Serve & Connect has grown from a hashtag to a movement for change, touching countless lives in South Carolina. Alia was featured on the Today Show for her efforts to promote a positive relationship between the police and community.

The annual celebration will begin at 4 p.m. at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Park and Community Center, 2300 Greene Street. A Wreath Laying Ceremony commemorating the historic marker honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be held at 3 p.m. at the corner of Harden and Greene streets on Monday, January 21. Members of the Alpha Psi Lambda and Omicron Iota Lambda chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will lead the ceremony.
