City Donates $8,000 to Palmetto Health Foundation’s Bosom Buddies Fund

The City of Columbia presented an $8,000 donation to the Palmetto Health Foundation for the Bosom Buddies Fund on Feb. 2, 2016. The City’s Breast Cancer Committee planned various events and sold t-shirts to raise money for the fight against breast cancer.

The donation to the Bosom Buddies Fund traditionally includes funds collected at the annual Mayor’s Breakfast Against Breast Cancer Isabel Law Breakfast, which was canceled last year due to the Historic October flood.

“The City of Columbia is proud to support the Bosom Buddies Fund,” stated Mayor Steve Benjamin. “Through the Palmetto Health Foundation, much needed assistance is provided to the patients and we are grateful for the opportunity to serve.”

The Municipal Association of SC Considers Columbia to be a Business Friendly City

In a recent publication of the Municipal Association of South Carolina, Columbia, SC was praised for being a business friendly city. The City’s Economic Development Department has been helpful in assisting business owners with saving money. The article described a situation where a restaurateur was looking to install a grease trap for about $50,000. Ryan Coleman, director of the City’s Economic Development office, explained how they assisted the restaurateur by helping him save more than $30,000.

“Our wastewater guy looked at his usage, and we determined he didn’t need as big  a system as he thought. He was looking at a system with a lot of extra bells and whistles that we didn’t require.”

Together We Can Read

The “Together We Can Read” (TWCR) initiative is a collaborative effort by the City of Columbia and Richland School District One that engages community leaders along with, local business leaders, local celebrities, officials, and students in the joys of reading. Elected officials from local government agencies and Richland One, and local celebrities read to all third grade students in Richland School District One.

Together, as a community, the City of Columbia and Richland One Schools hope to inspire a paradigm shift in our elementary schools to insure a bright future for our youth and community.

The goals for TWCR are as follows:

  • To allow children who may not have access to books at home to own a book of their own
  • To select a book that has a South Carolina focus so that children can identify and learn about their local culture history
  • To maintain a program that helps children understand why reading is important and allows them interaction with positive role models
