The Office of Business Opportunities (OBO) and its Technical Assistance, Education and Advocacy Division, provide highly professional support to Columbia's small business community. Whether you are a new, existing, or expanding business, efforts are focused on the total needs of small business growth and development.
We provide technical assistance, primarily through our various resource partners such as Minority Business Development Association, ECI-Find New Markets, University of South Carolina Small Business Development Center, Benedict College Small Business Development Center, Midland Technical College, and the Small Business Association. These organizations provide a wide array of expert technical assistance, particularly to start-up, existing and expanding companies, including counseling, training, market analysis, business plans and managerial assistance. This is done through private enterprise, government, higher education and local economic development organizations.
With the ever changing and unforgiving business environment, the need for businesses to adjust, adapt and refine their strategy is paramount for survival and growth. We provide and/or facilitate several educational, training, and workshop opportunities such as construction management school, understanding finance and lending, QuickBooks, Integrating Social Media Tools, and NxLevel Micro Entrepreneur Training. Educational programs are designed to be a multiplier driving growth, innovation, and development resulting in a high performance business.
The OBO serves as a proactive advocate for small businesses in Columbia projecting a pro-small business climate through efforts of public-private collaboration while improving the overall economic climate. For small business owners who create over half of the jobs, it is important to have an advocate to ensure the playing field is level. We promote the interests of Columbia's small businesses serving as a strong voice for inclusion for Small Minority and Women Owned Business, ensuring access to services, contracts and procurement fostering growth and development as one Columbia.
