It's no accident that Columbia is one of the fastest growing metro areas in the Southeast. As the home to state government, six major universities including the University of South Carolina (with over 30,000 students in their city center campus), and the nation's largest Army training facility, we enjoy a vibrant local economy built on a strong foundation. Our strategic Southeast location coupled with our business-friendly commercial environment, family friendly communities, a world-class selection of healthcare facilities, and a vibrant and burgeoning commitment to the arts is extremely attractive to new and innovative companies.
Our economic development and sustainability efforts are also strengthened by the close relationships we maintain with business organizations (like the SC Department of Commerce; Find New Markets, Inc.; the Central SC Alliance; and the University of South Carolina) and tourism related entities (like the SC Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism and the South Carolina Hospitality Association), all of which support an elevated quality of life in our business and residential communities.
The mission of the Office of Economic Development is to work with businesses and help them overcome the challenges to locating a new business operation in the City, growing an existing company locally, or starting a new business enterprise in Columbia. We are positioned to assist a company's management team in navigating through the various permitting, licensing, and requests for municipal services. Our staff will ensure that company officials have the information they need to develop and grow their business and will provide assistance in resolving issues in a timely manner. Our primary goal is to help local companies be competitive in the global market as efficiently and effectively as possible, and to know that the City of Columbia is a great place to operate a business.
